The Standard Poodle is one of the most recognized breeds in the world. This honor is mainly due to their dramatic and unique hairstyles. Have you ever wondered why Poodles wear those funny styles? Well, you might be surprised to learn that it has nothing to do with French fashion. In this article I will explain exactly why this breed sports such an exotic cut. Contrary to what many believe the poodle is not a French breed. The breed most likely developed in Germany. The name Poodle is derived from the German word 'pudel' which means, 'one who plays in water.' They were originally breed as a water retrievers. Their main duty was to fetch fowl for hunters. The breed dates back as far as the 15th century and is a descendant of the now extinct French Water Dog, the Barbet and possibly the Hungarian Water Hound. The poodle has a thick coat that helps to protect it from the cold climates. Unfortunately, it also absorbs water which is a hindrance when swimming. Hunters began clipping their dogs. Shaving hair from certain areas in order to make the dogs move more efficiently in the water. Although, they still wanted to protect the vital organs and joints from the cold so they let the hair grow in certain areas. It is easy to see that the poufs of hair left are mainly on the chest area and around the joints. A pouf of hair called a 'topnotch' is also left on the dogs head. This is so they can tie a colored ribbon to the head. The ribbons make it easy to identify dogs from a distance as they work in the water. This specialized clip is now referred to as the 'continental clip.' Which means it is the most commonly seen version of the Poodle hairstyle in the show ring. There are other variations of the continental clip including the 'English saddle clip' and the 'puppy clip.' Most show dogs are only allowed to wear a puppy clip in the show ring when they are less than a year old. Dogs older than a year must be trimmed in the continental or the English saddle clip when showing. There are some exceptions to this rule. Most Poodle owners don't show their dogs, and do not keep them in any of these highly specialized hairstyles. The time and money that goes into keeping a dog's coat in the top quality shape that these styles require is not something that the average dog owner wants to endure. Poodles have long been a favorite among groomers. Mainly because there is so much versatility when styling thick long hair. These days you can even find specialized grooming shows. The styles can get absolutely wild, making dogs into works of art. The smaller versions of the Poodles that you see did not become popular until the 18th century. Poodles where originally all mid to large sized dogs. These smaller poodles were breed down to be companion animals. While, the Poodle has been misidentified as a 'prissy' dog over the years you will honestly not find a sportier, manlier, or smarter dog. At least, not in my opinion. Poodles are great dogs they are highly intelligent, ranking second only to Border Collies, which is still debatable. Many Poodle owners will tell you they have never seen a smarter breed of canine than the Standard Poodle. Poodles have succeeded in many professions over the years including circus performers, truffle hunters, and service dogs of all kinds. They need plenty of exercise and regular grooming, but they are worth every ounce of work you put into them.
